If you are preparing for your first acupuncture visit, welcome! It is completely normal to have a few questions before walking through our doors. We love when new patients ask us what to expect—it helps us build a comfortable, collaborative space for your healing journey from day one.
At City Acupuncture Silver Lake, our introductory session currently lasts approximately 60 to 75 minutes. You do not need to understand Traditional Chinese Medicine before arriving, nor do you ever need to tolerate discomfort in silence. A great first visit is a dialogue: it includes time for your questions, clear informed consent, and any adjustments needed to keep you feeling completely comfortable.
What’s Included in Your First Visit?
Your introductory visit is designed to give us a full picture of your health while providing a restorative, tailored treatment. Here is how we break it down:
- Initial Consultation: We begin with a thorough conversation about your primary health concern and daily wellness patterns, including sleep, energy, digestion, stress, and temperature preferences. As part of our traditional assessment, we will also observe your tongue and feel the pulse at your wrists to help guide our diagnostic approach.
- Acupuncture Treatment: You will sit or lie in a fully supported, comfortable position while we place extremely thin, sterile, single-use needles at selected points. Most people find insertion surprisingly gentle. You might feel a quick pinch, a dull ache, warmth, tingling, or deep relaxation. Once the needles are in place, you simply rest quietly.
- Cupping & Adjunct Therapies: Depending on your unique needs, your session may include cupping (which uses gentle suction to relieve muscle tension and can leave temporary circular marks) or other supportive modalities such as gua sha, electro-acupuncture, or trigger-point work. We always explain the rationale and check in with you first.
- Herbal Advice & Personalized Treatment Plan: Before you head out, we will discuss any relevant herbal or supplemental recommendations to support your care at home. We will also outline a proposed treatment plan—including recommended session frequency, measurable goals, and expected costs—so you know exactly what to expect moving forward.
How to Prepare Before You Arrive
- Complete Your Intake Info: Please share an accurate picture of your health, including current medications, supplements, allergies, surgeries, injuries, or bleeding conditions. It is also helpful to describe your main symptom: When did it start? What makes it better or worse? How does it affect your sleep, work, or daily life? What would meaningful improvement look like to you?
- Eat a Light Meal: Unless we have given you specific clinical instructions, avoid arriving on an empty stomach. A light meal or snack beforehand keeps your energy steady and reduces the chance of feeling lightheaded.
- Wear Comfortable Clothing: Loose clothing that easily rolls above the knees and elbows makes reaching key acupuncture points simple. If a treatment area requires adjusting clothing, we always provide proper draping to respect your privacy and comfort.
- Give Yourself Travel Time: Los Angeles traffic isn’t always cooperative! Giving yourself extra time to park, check in, and settle helps ensure your appointment starts on a calm, unhurried note.
- Bring Your Questions: We love open communication. Great first-visit questions include:
- What are we treating today?
- What sensations are normal?
- How long will the needles remain in place?
- What should I do if I feel uncomfortable?
- Are you recommending any add-on therapies?
- How will we decide whether to continue care?
What to Expect During & After Treatment
Does Acupuncture Hurt?
Most patients find that acupuncture doesn’t hurt in the way they expected. Acupuncture needles are solid and significantly thinner than the hollow needles used for blood draws. If you ever feel a sharp, burning, or strongly uncomfortable sensation, tell us immediately so we can adjust or remove the needle. Consent is ongoing, and your comfort is our priority!
Resting with the Needles
While the needles are retained, you will rest quietly in a dimly lit room. Many patients close their eyes and fall asleep; others notice subtle body sensations or a soothing feeling of heaviness. There is no “correct” way to relax—just avoid making sudden, large movements while the needles are in place. If you need help or feel lightheaded, simply call for us.
After the Session
Once we remove and count the needles, take your time sitting up. It is common to feel deeply relaxed, calm, alert, or occasionally a bit sleepy or mildly sore. Most people return to their normal daily activities right away! We recommend hydrating normally, eating a regular meal, and avoiding unusually strenuous exercise immediately afterward. Pay attention to how your body feels over the next day or two—even subtle changes in sleep, pain intensity, or mood give us valuable information for your next visit.
Safety & Your Evolving Care Plan
Acupuncture is generally considered very safe when performed by a qualified, licensed practitioner using sterile, single-use needles. At the end of your visit, we will discuss next steps. Because every body responds differently, we do not offer rigid guarantees. Instead, your treatment plan will naturally evolve based on how you respond over time.
